Squeaky & Loose Hardwood Floor Repair in Houston

A squeak is your floor telling you something has moved. Sometimes it’s just two boards rubbing as the seasons change. Sometimes it’s a subfloor that has pulled away from a joist, or a pier-and-beam foundation that has shifted in Houston’s clay soil.

Squeaky & Loose Hardwood Floor Repair done right

We find the exact source of each squeak, fix it with the least invasive method, and hide every fastener so you’ll never know we were there. If the cause is structural, we’ll tell you — and point you to the right foundation professional.

Why Hardwood Floors Squeak

Wood expands and contracts with humidity. Over years, that movement loosens nails and opens small gaps, letting boards rub against each other, against nail shafts or against the subfloor.

  • Board-on-board friction from seasonal humidity swings
  • Nails that have loosened and slide in their holes
  • Subfloor separated from the floor joists (gap above the joist)
  • Undersized or over-spanned joists that flex between supports
  • Foundation settling — common with pier-and-beam homes on Houston’s expansive clay
  • Hollow spots where adhesive has failed under glue-down floors

How We Fix Squeaky Floors Without Tearing Them Up

The method depends on whether we can get under the floor.

From below (pier-and-beam crawl spaces)

Common in older Heights, Montrose and Garden Oaks homes. A tech goes under the house while another walks the floor, then we glue shims into gaps between joist and subfloor, add blocking between joists, and drive screws up through the subfloor — no marks on your finished floor at all.

From above (slab homes or no access)

We locate the joist, drill a pilot hole and drive a specialty trim-head or break-off screw that pulls the board down tight. The tiny hole is filled with color-matched filler and blended into the finish.

Glue-down floors over slab

Hollow or clicking spots in glue-down hardwood are re-bonded by injecting adhesive through a small hole, then weighting the area until it cures.

Local expertise

Squeaks, Clay Soil and Pier-and-Beam Homes

Houston’s expansive clay soil swells when wet and shrinks during drought, and pier-and-beam foundations move with it. Many older homes inside the Loop — especially in the Heights, Montrose, Garden Oaks and Oak Forest — sit on pier-and-beam, which is why squeaky and bouncy floors are so common there.

If several areas squeak, doors stick, or you see cracks over doorways, the floor squeaks may be a symptom of foundation movement. We’ll flag that during our inspection so you fix the cause, not just the noise.

FAQ

Squeaky & Loose Floor Repair FAQs

How much does it cost to fix squeaky hardwood floors?

In Houston, fixing 1–3 squeaky spots usually costs $200–$400. Treating a whole room or hallway typically runs $400–$800, and crawl-space shimming and blocking for pier-and-beam homes is about $450–$1,200.

Can you fix squeaky floors without removing the flooring?

Yes. Most squeaks are fixed from below by shimming and screwing the subfloor to the joists, or from above with trim-head screws that pull the board down and are hidden with color-matched filler. Removing flooring is rarely necessary.

Do squeaky floors mean structural damage?

Usually not — most squeaks come from loose nails or boards rubbing. But widespread squeaks combined with sloping floors, sticking doors or wall cracks can indicate foundation movement, which is common with pier-and-beam homes on Houston clay soil.

Why is my floor squeaking when I walk on it?

Your weight pushes a loose board or subfloor down, causing wood to rub against wood or against a nail shaft. Seasonal humidity changes, loosened nails and gaps between the subfloor and joists are the most common causes.

What is a quick fix for squeaky hardwood floors?

For minor board-on-board friction, working powdered graphite or talc into the seams can quiet a squeak temporarily. For a lasting fix, the board or subfloor needs to be mechanically secured to the joist.
