Hardwood Floor Board Replacement & Color Matching in Houston
A pet stain by the back door, a burn mark, a deep gouge from a dropped pan, or a few boards ruined by a leaking refrigerator line — none of these mean you need a new floor. We remove only the damaged boards and weave in new ones so the repair blends into the original pattern.

Hardwood Board Replacement & Color Matching done right
The hard part isn’t installing the boards. It’s matching them: same species, same width, same grain and the same color that your floor has aged into over decades. That’s where most repairs go wrong, and it’s what we specialize in.
How We Replace Hardwood Boards
We never just drop in a rectangle patch — a square-cut patch shows. Instead we use the lace-in (weave) method: damaged boards are cut out at staggered lengths so new board ends fall in different places, just like the original installation.
1. Remove the damaged boards
We plunge-cut the center of each damaged board, split it out, and carefully remove the tongue and groove from the surrounding boards without damaging them.
2. Inspect the subfloor
If water or insects caused the damage, we check the subfloor and joists below for moisture or rot and repair them first — otherwise the new boards will fail too.
3. Lace in matching boards
New boards are cut to staggered lengths, the bottom lip of the groove is removed where needed, and boards are glued and face- or blind-nailed into place.
4. Sand, stain and blend
The repair area is sanded flush, stained to match, and finished. For the most invisible result, we screen and recoat the whole room so the sheen is uniform.
How We Match Species, Size and Color
Color matching starts with identifying exactly what you have. Red oak and white oak look similar but take stain very differently; heart pine in older Heights homes has a red-orange patina that only reclaimed wood can match.
- Species: red oak, white oak, heart pine, maple, hickory, Brazilian cherry, walnut and more
- Width & thickness: 1½", 2¼" and 3¼" strip, wide plank, ¾" and 5/16" solid, and engineered
- Reclaimed lumber for older floors — we can pull boards from a closet to use in a visible area
- Hand-mixed stain samples tested on the new boards until the color matches in daylight
- Matching finish sheen (matte, satin, semi-gloss) so the patch doesn’t reflect differently

Matching Older Houston Floors
Many Houston homes built before 1960 have 2¼-inch red oak strip flooring — common in Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, Meyerland and Bellaire ranches. Older Victorian and Craftsman homes in the Heights and Montrose often have longleaf heart pine, which isn’t milled new anymore and has to be sourced reclaimed.
When a matching board can’t be sourced, we “borrow” original boards from inside a closet or under a built-in and use new boards in the hidden area. It’s an old-school trick that gives a perfect match where it matters.

FAQ
Board Replacement & Color Matching FAQs
Can you replace just one piece of hardwood floor?
Yes. A single damaged board can be cut out and replaced without removing neighboring boards. The new board’s groove lip is trimmed so it drops into place, then it’s glued, sanded flush, stained and finished to match.
How much does it cost to replace part of a hardwood floor in Houston?
Replacing 1–5 boards typically costs $350–$750 in Houston. Larger areas of 20–60 square feet usually run $1,200–$3,000, depending on species, access and whether the subfloor needs repair.
Will the new boards match my existing floor?
With the right species and a custom-mixed stain, replacement boards can be made nearly invisible. Because wood changes color with age and sunlight, we test stain samples on the new boards and recommend recoating the whole room for a uniform sheen.
Can you repair hardwood floors where a wall or kitchen island was removed?
Yes. After walls or islands are removed there is usually a strip of missing or unfinished floor. We weave in matching boards to tie the two sides together, then refinish so the transition disappears.
Is it expensive to replace floor boards?
Replacing a handful of boards is far less expensive than replacing a floor — usually a few hundred dollars versus thousands. Costs rise for rare species, reclaimed heart pine or when subfloor damage has to be fixed first.
